When can I tryout for Percussion Studio?

We host tryouts every semester. The next tryout is scheduled for Saturday, September 12 at 8 AM.

If you cannot make this time and date for tryouts, please contact an officer to arrange an earlier audition.

If you have any questions, please come visit us at MSC Open House, Sunday September 5 and drop by our informational later that evening.

If you have any other questions, please email an officer from our contacts page.

Listed below are the sections for a typical tryout. Performance on all sections will be used for evaluation. These parts will only be used to show what you can do. Each individual has his/her own unique talents and we want to know what you can add to our group.

  1. Snare Sightreading - You will have to sightread a piece of snare music. You have the option of trying either an easy or a hard piece that will be provided in the room (it should be fairly obvious which is which).
  2. Mallet Sightreading - Same as snare sightreading but on a mallet instrument. There will at least be a marimba and possibly a xylophone. Let us know if you prefer anything else (only other choices are really vibraphone and bells). You will have a few minutes to look over both sightreading pieces before you come into the audition room.
  3. Individual/Prepared Piece - You'll have approximately 3 minutes to perform a piece of your own on whatever instrument/device/being you wish. There aren't really any limitations to this other than being related to percussion (percussive/rhythmic, with or without any melody it doesn't matter). It should ideally be representative of something you enjoy to play...of course, it may not be. We will provide at minimum a concert snare and marimba. If you have special requests for instrumentation, let us know in your email IMMEDIATELY. Also please provide copies of the music if you are playing something that is written down.
  4. Interview - We just need to ask a few basic questions including your percussion experience, how you heard of us, your favorite cereal, among many possible others. Be prepared for anything! The interview should only take 5 to 10 minutes at most.
  5. Other Stuff - We may or may not ask you to do other stuff just to see what you're capable of (musically).

Tryouts will finish when they're finished, based upon the number of people trying out. We will, however, notify everyone trying out whether they made it or not sometime that afternoon. For those who make it, there will be a mandatory meeting for all Studio members the next day (Sunday, Sept. 13) at 3:30 PM. Please keep this day open as well. Again, please send an email to our officers if you are unable to attend any part of the tryout or if you have any special considerations or requirements for the tryout. Of course, also visit our forum or feel free to write an email if you have any questions. Best of luck and Gig'em.

For those not familiar with where BHS is, There is a map below, or click here for an interactive map.

We will have signs actually pointing to which door to use so ignore that part for now. And please do not park in spaces labeled as "Reserved."
